Homeschool Science

2020/2021 Homeschool Science Labs
  • Labs meet every other week from Sept - May

  • Costs - $115 per semester (Sept - Jan and Feb - May)

  • Families are welcome to use the curriculum of their choice for at home learning.

  • NEW THIS YEAR!  Elementary and Middle School Labs offer free optional online curriculum.  Optional online Biology and Advanced Biology Full Courses available for an additional cost.

Lily Pad Lab Homeschool Science Labs are designed to give students an opportunity for hands-on exploration alongside the science curriculum of their choice.  Labs are designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of concepts, connect the book knowledge to real-world applications, apply concepts to new situations and solve authentic problems.  We will focus on developing inquiry and experimentation skills as well as critical, quantitative, and qualitative thinking skills.

Each lab time together will consist of 1-4 labs, simulations, and/or activities focusing on the concepts students are learning at home.  For most lab classes families are responsible for teaching students content outside of the lab time; including curricula reading, practice work and assessing student progress.  Families are welcome to choose the curriculum of their choice. Students enrolled in Elementary, Middle School, Biology, and Advanced Biology lab classes have the option to enroll in the full curriculum virtual course taught by Vanessa Moessner

Typical Progression for Science Courses:

Elementary - Middle School - General Science - Physical Science - Biology - Chemistry - Advanced Biology - Physics

This is a typical progression but not set in stone.  If your student has a particular interest in a certain science subject I would encourage you to allow them to jump around.  Chemistry and Physics will require higher math skills.  There are also many electives to take in science.  If you are interested in learning more or need help deciding which course is best for your student please reach out to me.

2020/2021 Homeschool Science Lab Details and Schedule

Elementary Science Labs - grades K-5

Session 1 - every other week starting Thursday, Sept 17th 12:30pm - 2:00pm

Session 2 - every other week starting Thursday, Sept 24rd 12:30pm - 2:00pm

(2 sessions to ensure smaller class size)

Each Lab class will consist of 1.5 hrs of hands-on experiments, activities, projects, and/or simulations based around one science concept.

Topics are different each year.  Topic list will be posted in August.

Parents will need to supplement labs with at home learning by choosing to participate in the (free) online class or providing your child with books and materials about the topics.

Our online class:

  • Seesaw as a class informational platform

  • Content will be original or accessed from BrainPop or Ology

  • 100% optional

  • 100% free with enrollment in the lab class

  • Takes 10-30 minutes per day, depending on student interest

My goal for adding the online class to supplement our labs is to increase student understanding of concepts while showcasing how amazing and FUN science is!  Our lab time just isn’t enough!  In the past students have shown such interest in topics we are experimenting with.  Our online class will give us the opportunity to continue exploring.  NO PRESSURE to complete activities and assignments, but ample enthusiasm from me if exploration continues at home!  Students will not be “graded” on their work but encouraged to work up to their potential!

General Science Labs - grades 7-9

Every other Monday, starting Sept 14th - 12:30-2:30pm

General Science is a great stepping stone to the more in depth studies in science.  General Science gives students a broad look at different areas of science and encourages understanding of the world around them.

During our lab classes together we will perform 1-4 lab experiments focusing on lab safety, inquiry building, problem solving, concept connections, and the fundamentals of writing lab reports.

General Science Labs at Lily Pad Lab follow the sequence of topics in the Apologia General Science curriculum.  Students are not required to use this curriculum or purchase the lab book.

Parents will be responsible for at-home learning using the curriculum of their choice.

Physical Science Labs

Every other Monday, starting Sept 21st, 12:30 - 2:30pm

During physical science labs students will explore topics such as atomic structure, periodic table, chemical bonds, reactions and energy, motion, forces, energy, waves and sound, light, electricity and magnetism, and Earth’s structure, weathering, and atmosphere.

During our lab classes together we will perform 1-4 lab experiments focusing on lab safety, inquiry building, problem solving, concept connections, and the fundamentals of writing lab reports.
